The Best Tripod Head
Wow...if you want full control of your photos and near perfect precision, then a gear head absolutely can not be beat and the combination of reasonable price and durability make the 410 the best of the bunch. When talk of tripod heads come up most of the talk goes to the ball heads, which are great for certain applications, but once comfortable with a gear head it is really hard to use anything else.
The 410 gear head offers movement in 3 directions like a 3-way pan head, but use gears for the movements. The gears allow you to dial to the exact angle you want and if you take a photo and don't quite like it you can easily dial just one more click for perfection. Unbelievable control. The 410 also has a feature of being able to disengage the gears and quickly move to the general location desired and then use the gears for fine tuning.
The gear head does have a fair amount of weight to it, because it is really solidly built. Bogen-Manfrotto makes a gear head that is one step up called the 405 Pro, which is very similar in design to the 410, but offers an increased weight load for medium format cameras. Because of the large increase in price, the more affordable 410 gear head is the best tripod head.
